Make sure your contents insurance covers Christmas presents

Filed in Personal Finance 0 comments

Lots of time, effort – and money – goes into finding the right Christmas presents for your loved ones. But before you go shopping, make sure you check to see if your new shiny gadgets and gizmos will be covered by your contents insurance. Now’s also a good time to check your buildings insurance – you can find buildings insurance quotes online.

It’s sad but true. Christmas – along with its bounty of presents and valuables – attracts opportunistic thieves. So it’s important to check that your things will be covered this season with the right contents insurance policy, before it starts.

Take precautions with your extra valuables

There are things you can do to help put off burglars, like keeping your home, outbuildings, garages and sheds securely locked. Also don’t take any risks, such as leaving a door key under your doormat for guests, or near an easily accessible window, no matter how tempting it is.

And with longer nights, it’s useful to make sure you leave lights on when you’re out, or even get timers that make it look like you’re moving from room to room.

Then, of course, after Christmas morning has come and gone, don’t leave gift packaging on the pavement for the rubbish collection. It advertises just what expensive items are lying around your home. It’s better to take the new telly or laptop boxes to a recycling unit where no one can see where you live.

Check your policy, especially for a seasonal increase

Unfortunately, no matter how much you prepare and secure your home, a burglary could still happen. This is why it’s better to cover your things should the worst happen. If you haven’t got a policy in place, make sure you look online for contents insurance quotes.

Luckily, some insurers offer an automatic seasonal increase. Essentially, this increases the contents limit of your sum insured by a certain percentage, and up to a specified amount. It will cover things such as gifts, and extra food and drink, over the festive period.

Make sure you look at your insurance policy to see what you would be insured for. And don’t forget to do this well in advance. With all the planning and preparations you’ll have for Christmas, it’s too easy for insurance to fall to the bottom of your festive ‘to do’ list.

And while you’re at it, it might be a good time to double check both your contents and home insurance together. After all, as the saying goes ‘a stitch in time saves nine’. Once everything’s in place, you can start your gift shopping, safe in the knowledge that your Christmas will be covered.
