Facebook, Organization & Revolution

Filed in Politics 3 comments

One has to wonder if Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg thought about the potential to change the world on this magnitude: cause countries to shutdown all Internet access, serve as a organizational medium for national revolution, topple long standing monarchies/dictatorships, etc. First helping protesters in Iran, then helping Egyptian organizers, now setting the stage for a revolution in Saudi Arabia.

The irony for an history buff like me is that social media/crowdsourcing/organizational websites are doing what the the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Afghanistan War, and many others like them couldn’t do… topple regimes that “freedom” couldn’t erase and give power back to the people by leaving the “winning of the hearts and minds” where it belongs.

If only there were a 3x Short ETF tracking dictators, monarchs and despots.

I’m very excited by this massive change in the way information/ideas are exchanged. Only because I’m excited to see what my children’s generation will do having been brought up in a world where even the smallest idea has the chance to change humanity …
