Always the wannabe astronaut, rarely do I pass up the chance to explain about how big the universe actually is. However, trying to explain the size and scope of the universe to someone who knows little about astronomy, isn’t aware that many of the “stars” in the night sky are actually galaxies containing billions of individual stars, or managed to fall asleep during the lecture on scientific notation (e.g. the difference between 1 x 1012 miles vs. 1 x 1015 miles is massive), trying to enlighten them might be a lesson in futility.
