YouTube, and video sharing in general, operates much like a meritocracy in that people talk about it, comment on it, vote you up, blog about you, etc. However, it also is a self-fueling evolutionary process where it attracts a crowd (e.g. crowdsourcing) to a new idea, but it also speeds up how someone else will try to improve whatever you are doing.
In other words: new ideas beget new, better ideas.
