Leave it to the master of observational comedy — George Carlin — to crank out one of the best anticonsumerism bits in history before the war against “stuff” became an observable microtrend.
I say microtrend because don’t believe the movement (if you can call it that) against buying “more stuff” has enough practitioners to be a full fledged trend. However, the jury is still out since Gen Y and a few late Gen X’ers (like me) are beginning to shift their consumerism habits to buying used stuff versus buying new stuff.
Personally, I love this video clip because in-your-face realism, so frequently used in observational comedy, has an interesting way of stimulating neurons that are difficult to reach. So it’s clever and effective method of being persuasive, without being pushy or noticeably preachy.

I miss George Carlin! This is how I feel every time I move. I can’t figure out where I got all this stuff!
I feel the same way. When I moved out of my college place to my first job, I packed my clothes and my PC into my car, and took off. If I tried moving today, I’d be lucky to get all of my crap into a 24 foot Ryder or U-Haul truck.
