Lots of People are Making Money Off of Tiger Woods’ Transgressions

I’ve routinely tweeted how ludicrous it is that modern mainstream media picks up one scary story (think Swine Flu) or an infamous scandal (think Tiger Woods “transgressions”) and beats it to death with weeks of value-less coverage.

Look, I realize that times are tough and even the paparazzi have to eat, but come on… surely we don’t need that many “expert” analyses and hour long programming segments from NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC.

Do we?

I suppose the entire screw you economics attitude was best expressed by Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz:

God Bless Tiger! This week we got a huge uplift. It’s kind of hard to put an ad up next to [Michael Jackson's] funeral.

So the guy cheated. So he’s a bad guy. So he’s been getting his freak on. Big deal. Men are pigs. Is this news to anyone?

I’m sure the PGA, Nike, Gillette, and many other advertisers are disappointed the squeaky clean image is gone forever. But I’m willing to bet there are far better stories out there for a solid investigative journalist to discover rather than who else Tiger has diddled.

Move on. Story over.

I am just as sick as you about hearing about Tiger Woods. Seriously he is still one of the most amazing athletes in the world. Between this stupid crap and John and Kate I want to claw my eyeballs out when the news comes on. Seriously I thought this was the kind of crap that was relegated to E! not CNN. Go find some real news people.

I’m not exactly sure why CNN wants to reinvent themselves as a TMZ or E!, but I suppose scandals and gossip require little work for the same ad dollars.

i second your post. i think the media is all over woods because they are just jealous because he has all the money he will ever need and a beautiful wife(that will hopefully not leave him). i think people get a sadistic sense of gratification when they see that their idols are just as human as the rest of us, But as they say “and this too shall pass away”
