This year, I got a chance to play my first season of fantasy baseball. Like most rookies in their first year… I got my ass handed to me.
To be completely honest, I really didn’t have a clue what was going on until halfway through the season. And since I was bumbling around like an idiot, I got behind in the standings pretty quick. I was doing okay, as in I was pulling in some decent stats from my players, but I wasn’t doing as well as other veterans who knew how the game is supposed to be played.
This being an personal finance and investing blog, I can make dozens of similarities between personal finance and fantasy baseball. Team management vs. portfolio management, the importance of researching your players vs. researching your investments, trading too much vs. sticking with known performers, etc. The list can go on and on, but now that my first rookie season is over, I would say the best tip I can offer would be to study up on the players you want to draft instead of relying on what little knowledge you might think you know from listening to ESPN as background noise during your morning coffee. Staying informed versus actually having the knowledge to make informed decisions are completely different things.
Regardless of the results, I had a lot of fun and plan on giving my PF bloggers a better show next year. Here are the results, as well as a few best posts from everyone in the league.
Even though I became semi-obsessed with tracking my daily performance and it usurped half an hour everyday compulsively checking stats or haggling over the next big trade, I would recommend every baseball fan give fantasy baseball a shot. It makes the baseball season far more interesting, and after a while, you’ll begin to feel like you’re a part — albeit a small part — of the team.
These were guest posts I submitted and a few carnivals I participated in over the last few weeks
Festival of Frugality at Funny About Money.
My guest post at No Debt Plan discussing the negative impact active trading can have on portfolio returns.
The MoneyHackers carnival at Credit Card Offers IQ.

Sometimes the numbers don’t accurately reflect the play that went on. Hope you had fun and we get to play again next season.
I agree that fantasy baseball makes the season much more interesting. You follow the whole league and not just your local team. It makes the postseason interesting as well, especially when you aren’t watching your home team play you at least know the other players.
