I’ve been fairly quiet about the Big Three Auto Bailout for some time because I really began to feel like I was beating a dead horse.
But this morning, I came across news that General Motors is cutting another 10,000 jobs in the U.S. but investing $1 Billion of federal loans to further GM’s interests in the Brazilian economy.
I’m confused.
The Big Three’s primary crutch for a government sponsored loan (e.g. our taxpayer money), was to save the U.S. economy. But GM decides to build/upgrade factories in Brazil instead?
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m feeling the need to shout SHENANIGANS!
The theory went, if we allow GM, Ford and Chrysler to go bankrupt, the spike in job losses would cripple the U.S. economy further exacerbating the current economic crisis.
Since December, I’ve sat idly by gritting my teeth while watching commercials from my local car dealers reminding me that it’s my civic duty to Buy American!
Statements like the following have been commonplace:
Are you aware that it was the Big Three that switched from making cars and trucks to planes and tanks virtually overnight during World War II?
Are you mistakenly buying imports claiming to be U.S. made that only had a bumper bolted on here in the U.S.? Don’t be misled. Buy American!
Of course, most people aren’t aware that American and British soldiers nicknamed the American made Sherman tank ”The Ronson” because they turned into a death trap the first time they were struck with a German made anti-tank round. As WWII history buffs know, this dubious name was a comparison to the Ronson cigarette lighter who had a very clever sales pitch saying their lighter “always lit the first time struck”. This little fact was kept from the American public because it might affect public opinion or hurt the war effort, but history definitely shows that American made tanks were completely substandard to German built tanks. Sound familiar?
Never mind that the last “American made car” that I purchased had a substantial proportion of it’s parts manufactured and assembled in Canada and Germany. I just love how salesman convolute the truth and simply expect us to take them at their word.
What we’re really is seeing an organization that is completely and utterly desperate. They’re hoping to play off of sympathies and blurred fiction hoping they can lure public interest into saving their crumbling position of power.
On the flip side of this argument, Brazil might be one of the few growth markets left for GM to exploit. Maybe the profits taken from the citizens of Brazil can pay for the massive amounts of GM retirees who might lose their pensions and retirement benefits.
But that’s what we do these days. Right? Passing the buck and making someone else pay for things is rapidly becoming the American way.
Maybe I shouldn’t complain. At least GM has finally found a way to wage a war of attrition against the UAW!

HAHA – The Cheetah! I haven’t heard that name since a wild night partying in Buckhead.
Maybe GM will save money partying in Brazil. If you’ve ever seen a popular Brazilian beach, I hear they’re almost as good as The Cheetah.

I love to see my hard earned money, taken from me, my children, and their children with the false promise of HELPING me and then these companies through it around like they are at a bachelor party at The Cheetah. Way to go congress, lets cut that 800+ billion check, the world needs more strippers…
