It may not be as hot a ticket as The Dark Knight, but the new documentary I.O.U.S.A is my must see movie of the summer.
As the title suggests, the implication of an I.O.U. (an acronym for “I owe you”) being permanently stamped on any American symbol is alarming to say the least. With many emerging countries buying up our national debt almost as fast as we can ring up the credit card bills, it does send a serious chill down some people’s spines. Like mine!
Take a look at the I.O.U.S.A Movie Trailer.
Such films have a way of generating buzz due to the brutal honesty, but the film also seems to be packaged in a quick moving, negative format that often appeal to the masses because we can cast blame upon the politicians in Washington instead of looking at our own financial house of cards.
One interesting side note is that I.O.U.S.A is made by the same studio that brought us Super Size Me. Which in my opinion, was one of the most enlightening documentaries ever made. Morgan Spurlock and his colleagues shed some much deserved bad publicity on the fast food industry and almost single-handedly forced McDonald’s to eliminate the Super Size meal options from their menu.
My hope, and I’m sure that of the I.O.U.S.A’s creators, would be that I.O.U.S.A can wake up the great American contempt that lies in all of us, and begin making the changes to our crippled political system that can actually solve the national debt issue instead of allowing it to remain as a punchline for David Letterman’s Top 10 List.
Have you seen it lately? Where is the joke?
